Palliative care is an area of healthcare that focuses on relieving and preventing the suffering of patients. Unlike hospice care, palliative care is appropriate for patients in all disease stages, including those undergoing treatment for curable illnesses and those living with chronic diseases, as well as patients who are nearing the end of life. Palliative medicine utilizes a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, relying on input from physicians, pharmacists, nurses, social workers, psychologists and other allied health professionals in formulating a plan of care to relieve suffering in all areas of a patient\'s life. This multidisciplinary approach allows the palliative care team to address physical, emotional, spiritual and social concerns that arise with advanced illness.

Medications and treatments are said to have a palliative effect if they relieve symptoms without having a curative effect on the underlying disease or cause. This can include treating nausea related to chemotherapy or something as simple as morphine to treat the pain of broken leg or ibuprofen to treat aching related to an influenza (flu) infection.

Although the concept of palliative care is not new, with the increasing focus on a person\'s quality of life, this genre of care has come to be recognized as an important element of the overall care plan.

Hospice care is a type and philosophy of care that focuses on the palliation of a chronically ill, terminally ill or seriously ill patient\'s pain and symptoms, and attending to their emotional and spiritual needs. The modern concept of hospice includes palliative care for the incurably ill given in such institutions as hospitals or nursing homes, but also care provided to those who would rather spend their last months and days of life in their own homes.

An important aspect of hospice care is the role of the social worker in helping relatives cope up with the knowledge and agony of seeing their relative in the last phases of his or her life. At IEC we understand what the family goes through in these turbulent times and we do everything in our scope to extend our help and care for easing the pain and suffering of the patient and their relatives.

Physiotherapy or physical therapy (sometimes abbreviated to PT) primarily concerns the remediation of impairments and disabilities and the promotion of mobility, functional ability, quality of life and movement potential through examination, evaluation and physical intervention. It is carried out by physical therapists (known as physiotherapists) and physical therapist assistants. In addition to clinical practice, other activities encompassed in the physical therapy profession include research, education and consultation.

The physiotherapy unit is combined with the occupational therapy unit and located in the basement next to cafeteria. Out-patient physiotherapy services are provided to persons with physical disabilities, accident victims, congenital conditions, and aging persons with limited mobility and multiple orthopedic disorders.

Occupational therapy (OT) is the use of treatments to develop, recover, or maintain the daily living and work skills of people with a physical, mental or developmental condition. Occupational therapy is a client-centered practice that places a premium on the progress towards the client’s goals. Occupational therapy interventions focus on adapting the environment, modifying the task, teaching the skill, and educating the client/family in order to increase participation in and performance of daily activities, particularly those that are meaningful to the client. Occupational therapy often involves physical therapy.
